In early December, I attended the biannual GMAC Summit, a special conference for test prep companies that is put on by  the makers of the GMAT. Click this link  to read Part 1 of my report. Integrated Reasoning Integrated Reasoning (IR) has existed long enough now that GMAC is starting to be able to draw some conclusions about the efficacy of the section. Dr. Lawrence Rudner, chief psychometrician of GMAC, is quite pleased with the section’s performance to date. Though they still need to collect more data to be sure, early results indicate that IR is actually a little bit better of a predictor of grades in business school than are the Quant and Verbal scores. It will still be a while before they can collect as solid/extensive data as they have for Quant and Verbal, but perhaps IR will eventually  become the most important section! (Don’t worry: if you are applying right now, nothing has changed. Even if you are not planning to apply until next year, the importance of IR probably will not change extensively by then.) No admissions officers were in attendance at the summit, but GMAC did report that they have heard that admissions consultants are starting to consider using IR as a tie breaker for borderline cases. For example, imagine that a school considers 680+ a strong score and 630 to 670 an average score. For the pool of 630 to 670 candidates (only a few of whom are likely to be admitted), one potential tie breaker is the IR score. If IR is difficult for you, do not stress: that any school is making this tie breaker decision based solely on the IR score is very unlikely. After all, many different variables go into an application; schools might also decide to use number of years of work experience, under-represented industries or some other factor. If you do tend to perform well on IR, though, then bonus: you have an extra mark in the plus column. Interestingly, U.S. candidates are tending to do a bit better on IR than other candidates. (This is also true for the Verbal section of the test, while non-U.S. candidates  tend to do better than U.S. candidates  on the Quant section of the test.) A lot of people consider IR more of a Quant section, but Verbal is just as important. If quant is your strength, then you will feel that IR is testing verbal more, and vice versa. In short, study both quant and verbal (which you are already doing for the main test) and aim for a 5 or higher on IR. If you plan to apply to the top programs or go into consulting or banking after business school, then aim for a 6 or higher. 9 Tips for Successful Textbook Adoption

Textbooks are vital tools within the realm of education and textbook adoption is an essential part of the process. The textbook industry is a multi-billion dollar industry.  Ã¢â‚¬â€¹Textbooks are to teachers and students as a bible is to pastors and their congregations. The issue with textbooks is that they quickly become outdated as standards and content continually change. For example, the impending Common Core State Standards are resulting in a massive shift in focus amongst textbook manufacturers. To offset this, many states adopt textbooks in a five-year cycle rotating amongst the core subjects. It is essential that the people choosing the textbooks for their district choose the right textbook because they will be stuck with their choice for at least five years. The following information will guide you through the textbook adoption process on your way to choosing the right textbook for your needs. Form a Committee Many districts have curriculum directors that lead the textbook adoption process, but sometimes this process falls back on the school principal. In any case, the person put in charge of this process should put a committee of 5-7 members together to assist in the adoption process. The committee should be made up of the curriculum director, building principal, several teachers who teach the subject up for adoption, and a parent or two. The committee will be charged with finding the best textbook that meets the overall district’s needs. Obtain Samples The first duty of the committee is to solicit samples from each of the textbook vendors that have been approved by your state department. It is critical that you only select approved vendors. Textbook companies will send you a comprehensive set of samples that include both teacher and student materials across all grade levels for the subject being adopted. Be sure to have a place set aside with lots of room to store your samples. Once you have finished previewing the material, you can typically return the material back to the company at no charge. Compare Content to Standards Once the committee has received all their requested samples, they should begin to go through the scope and sequence looking for how the textbook aligns to current standards. No matter how good a textbook is if it does not align to the standards your district uses, then it becomes obsolete. This is the most crucial step in the textbook adoption process. It is also the most tedious and time-consuming step. Each member will go through each book, making comparisons, and taking notes. Finally, the entire committee will look at each individual’s comparisons and cut out any textbook that doesn’t align at that point. Teach a Lesson The teachers on the committee should pick a lesson from each perspective textbook and use that book to teach the lesson. This allows teachers to get a feel for the material, to see how it motivates their students, how their students respond, and to make comparisons about each product through the application. The teachers should make notes throughout the process highlighting things they liked and things they didn’t. These findings will be reported to the committee. Narrow It Down At this point, the committee should have a solid feel for all the different textbooks available. The committee should be able to narrow it down to their top three choices. With only three choices, the committee should be able to narrow their focus and are on their way to deciding which is the best choice for their district. Bring in Individual Sales Representatives The sales representatives are the true experts within their respective textbooks. Once you have narrowed your choices, you can invite the remaining three company’s sales representatives to give a presentation to your committee members. This presentation will allow committee members to gain more in-depth information from an expert. It also allows the committee members to ask questions that they may have about a specific textbook. This part of the process is about giving committee members more information so that they can make an informed decision. Compare Costs The bottom line is that school districts operate on a tight budget. This means that the cost of textbooks is likely already in the budget. It important that the committee knows they cost of each textbook as well as the district’s budget for these textbooks. This plays a crucial part of choosing textbooks. If the committee deems a particular textbook as the best option, but the cost of purchasing those books is $5000 over the budget, they probably should consider the next option. Compare Free Materials Every textbook company offers â€Å"free materials† if you adopt their textbook. These free materials are of course not â€Å"free† as you likely pay for them in some manner, but they are valuable to your district. Many textbooks now offer materials that can be incorporated with classroom technology such as smart boards. They often offer free workbooks for the life of the adoption. Each company puts their own spin on the free materials, so the committee needs to look at each available option in this area as well. Come to a Conclusion The final charge of the committee is to decide which textbook they should adopt. The committee will put in many hours over the course of several months and should have a clear idea of that point as to which option is their best option. The main thing is that they make the right choice because they will likely be stuck with their choice for several years to come.

If the information security is not proper then it can lead to lack of proper information by the enterprises (Tsohou, Karyda, Kokolakis and Kiountouzis, 2015).The organization makes continuous planning by giving focus on the security and risk management procedures that are set within the organization. To secure the information it has become a complex activity, so it is essential to take into consideration security strategies that need to extend to mobile platforms, cloud systems, and social ecosystems. The significance of developing information secu rity strategy is often overlooked. A strategy that is related to the security of information acts like a roadmap that creates the security practices that should be taken into consideration to survive the challenges that occur in future. The strategy will help the organization to attain the long-term safety objectives by considering the practices that will assist the company in accomplishing the future security state (Gordas, 2014). It is analyzed that the enterprises should implement effective information safety strategies so that the risk can be minimized in a proper way. If the small and medium enterprise takes into consideration effective information safety strategies, then the information can be secured on the long-term basis. To enhance the security of the organization on a long-term basis, the company should consider and understand the security status and the goals that are related to the long-term strategic security road mapping (Siponen, Mahmood and Pahnila, 2014). Information security and management gives emphasis on maintaining confidentiality, integrity and also the availability of the information data. The responsibility of the management is to take care of the effective implementation of the information security system in the enterprises by establishing information security committee. The committee consists of the representatives from the different departments (Kines, Andersen, Andersen, Nielsen and Pedersen, 2013). The representatives are from the background of information security, internal audit, and risk management. Effective information security and safety is important so that the information that is obtained can be maintained as it is valuable for the organization. It is essential to think of the safety in financial terms. In order to understand the significance of information in the organization, the employees must have a proper concept of the security of information in the organization. The enterprises should give emphasis on the f ake posts that are given on the social media sites that affect the goodwill of the organization (Alshboul and Streff, 2015). It is very important to give concentration on the information security, as it is considered as a main element of the organization. If the organization lost its information then it can be a great loss and there are various drawbacks that can be faced. The first drawback is related to the confidentiality of the organization. The confidential information of the organization can be leaked and it can give negative impact on the financial position of the company (Peltier, 2016). It gives an unfair advantage to the competitors and damages the goodwill and even bankrupts the organization. The digital information of the enterprise that consists of confidential information should also be protected from misuse. As, it is a challenge to protect the information that is sent and exchanged electronically with the use of the internet, but there are certain precautions that should be taken into consideration by the organization. The precautions are: The enterprises should create a passcode entry on the files in which the sensitive information is included. The rules should be designed for the transfer or copying the information from the internet. The security system should be uploaded in the computer like firewall so that the threats can be easily detected. There are many security incidents that are concerned about malicious code like worms, viruses, and Trojans that have given negative impact on the operations of the organization. The virus gives direct impact on the files and also on the software of the computer. It can delete or erase the file; and also various challenges are faced by the organization. So the company should emphasis on enhancing the information security so that the information cannot be leaked. To create an effective information security in the enterprises it is important to give training to the employees so that the valuable information can be secured (Smit Watkins, 2012). The customers are also an important aspect of every organization. With the loss of customer database, it can also give impact on the sales of the business. The information that is leaked is used by other business and by this the competition level is enhanced and faced by the company. Also to give focus on enhancing the information security, it is important to find an expert who can manage the information. If the organization maintain the information in a secure manner, then it is very easy to attain success and objectives of the organization. It is important that everyone should need to secure the information of the company. Every employee of the organization should make effort to implement and carry out effective information security and management strategies in an organization (Alton, 2016). So, the enterprises should make effective information security system. There are various organizations that are spending a lot of money to safeguard the information of the organization. The small and medium enterprises should plan in an effective manner, strategies that should be taken into consideration.
